Simple Sugar Donuts

These fluffy sugar donuts are a delightful treat that bring back sweet childhood memories. Perfect for cozy weekends or holiday baking.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup milk (whole or non-dairy)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons yeast
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg
  • Oil for frying
  • Extra sugar for dredging

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast: In a small bowl, combine the warm milk with the yeast and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  2. Mix the dry ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, and salt.
  3. Combine wet and dry: Create a small well in the middle of the dry ingredients and pour in the yeast mixture, along with the beaten egg. Mix until a dough begins to form.
  4. Knead the dough: On a floured surface, knead the dough for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. First rise: Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover it, and let it rise for about 1 hour until doubled in size.
  6. Shape the donuts: Punch down the dough, roll it out, and use a donut cutter to cut out shapes.
  7. Second rise: Place the shaped donuts on a baking sheet, cover them, and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
  8. Heat the oil: In a deep pot, heat oil to about 350°F.
  9. Fry the donuts: Carefully place the donuts in the hot oil and fry for about 1-2 minutes on each side.
  10. Dredge and serve: Roll warm donuts in granulated sugar and serve immediately.

Notes

For variations, consider spicing the sugar or glazing the donuts after frying.
