Classic Monte Cristo Sandwich

A crispy, golden sandwich layered with savory ham, melty gouda cheese, and an eggy coating, perfect for a cozy meal.

  • 4 slices of bread (white or whole grain)
  • 4 oz ham (thinly sliced)
  • 4 oz gouda cheese (sliced)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup whole milk
  • Butter (for cooking)
  • Powdered sugar (optional)
  • Jam or syrup (for serving, optional)

Instructions

  1. Prep your bread by laying out four slices.
  2. Layer ham and gouda cheese on two slices of bread, topping with another slice to form a sandwich.
  3. Whisk the eggs and milk together until well blended.
  4. Soak each sandwich in the egg mixture, coating both sides.
  5. Warm a skillet over medium heat, melting a tablespoon of butter.
  6. Cook the soaked sandwiches for 3-4 minutes on each side until golden brown and cheese is melted.
  7. Let the sandwiches rest on a paper towel lined plate.
  8. Slice them diagonally and serve with powdered sugar and a side of jam or syrup.
