Mom’s Raised Doughnuts

A nostalgic recipe for fluffy raised doughnuts that embody the warmth and comfort of family traditions.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons instant yeast
  • 3/4 cup warm milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • Oil for frying
  • Powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions

  1. Activate the Yeast: In a small bowl, combine the warm milk (around 110°F) and instant yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until it’s frothy.
  2. Mix the Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, and salt.
  3. Combine Wet Ingredients: Once your yeast has bubbled up, add the egg and melted butter to the yeast mixture.
  4. Form the Dough: Gradually add the wet mixture to the dry mixture. Stir with a wooden spoon until a rough dough forms.
  5. Knead the Dough: Lightly flour your countertop and transfer the dough. Knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  6. First Rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour.
  7. Shape the Doughnuts: Once risen, punch the dough down and roll it out to about 1/2 inch thick. Cut out your doughnuts.
  8. Fry Away: Heat oil to about 350°F, carefully drop doughnuts into the hot oil, and fry for about 1-2 minutes per side until golden brown.
  9. Cool and Dust: Let them drain on paper towels and dust with powdered sugar while they’re still warm.

Notes

For variations, consider chocolate glazed, jelly-filled, spiced doughnuts, or even savory options with herbs.
