Homemade New Orleans Beignets

Fluffy, deep-fried pillows of happiness from New Orleans, dusted with powdered sugar.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 large egg
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • Powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions

  1. Mix the dry ingredients in a large bowl: flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  2. Combine the wet ingredients in another bowl: melted butter, milk, and egg.
  3. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and stir until a sticky dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 30 seconds until soft.
  5. Let the dough rise in a greased bowl for about 60 minutes or until doubled in size.
  6. Prepare oil in a deep frying pan to about 350°F (175°C).
  7. Roll out the dough to 1/4 inch thick and cut into squares.
  8. Fry the squares in hot oil for about 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown.
  9. Drain on paper towels and dust with powdered sugar.
  10. Repeat until all dough squares are cooked.

Notes

Serve with a sprinkle of powdered sugar and enjoy with coffee or chicory for the ultimate experience.
